What is a Benne Wafer?
A Benne Wafer is a thin, crispy, sweet, and slightly salty cookie made with toasted sesame seeds. A true Lowcountry delicacy, these treats originated right here in Charleston, SC!

✨ A Taste of History ✨
Benne Wafers have been a part of the Lowcountry since Colonial times. The word benne (Bantu for sesame) traces back to East Africa, brought through West Africa by enslaved Africans to the Southern U.S., where sesame was widely cultivated.

In Bantu tradition, eating these cookies is believed to bring good luck—and we like to think so too! 🍀

We’re Olde Colony Bakery, the oldest operating bakery in Charleston, serving the community since 1940. We’ve been crafting Benne Wafers ever since, honoring the rich heritage and flavors of the Lowcountry.
