Home of the Original Charleston Benne Wafers
The Olde Colony Bakery is well known for our Benne Wafer, a tasty toasted sesame seed cookie. We continue to make this sweet and salty treat, the olde fashioned way, by hand and all natural!
Unique to the Lowcountry since Colonial times, Benne (the Bantu-word for sesame) was brought from East Africa and planted extensively throughout the South. Other foods brought from Africa in the 17th and 18th century include peanuts, sweet potatoes, okra, black-eyed peas and collard greens.
